US House Races
WASHINGTON (REUTERS) – US presidential candidate Joe Biden on Sunday (Jan 5) won the support of three politicians who helped Democrats seize control of the House of Representatives in 2018, endorsements that could help bolster arguments he is best positioned to fend off Republicans this year.
The backing by Democratic US Representatives Elaine Luria of Virginia and Chrissy Houlahan and Conor Lamb of Pennsylvania is evidence of the support for Biden among Democrats in “swing” districts that were held by Republicans before the 2018 vote.
If Democrats push the wrong message or candidate…
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is denying individual assistance to residents in parts of the Mohawk Valley, affected by severe flooding from a devastating Halloween storm that hit last year, which damaged 1,100 homes in Oneida County. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he’ll appeal the decision.
Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente called it an unconscionable decision.
“I have to believe when you see a house go down a river, when you see a house hanging over an embankment, when you see homes full of two feet of mud and four feet of water, in their living spaces, when is it enough for…
Comedian Ricky Gervais kicked off the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday evening with a string of pointed jokes in his opening monologue. Among the seated Hollywood A-listers inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel ballroom in Beverly Hills, California, was Tom Hanks — and his reactions to the monologue are already the most memeable part of the night.
The first of several Tom Hanks reactions came after Gervais made a joke about actress Felicity Huffman, saying he rode to the awards ceremony in a car that had a license plate probably made by the actress (who was…
A recently-filed lawsuit claims Rep. TJ Cox (D–Fresno) continued to maintain involvement in some of his various companies, including a Canadian gold mining firm, after he formally divested from them.
The lawsuit, filed on behalf of a Fresno County doctor, a Sacramento County doctor, and his wife who loaned funds to a heavy equipment rental company controlled by Cox, claim the Congressman defrauded them to the tune of $150,000 plus interest by failing to disclose conflicts of interest and make loan repayments.
The suit centers on a round of business…

On Dec. 12, the House of Representatives took a vital step to lower prescription drug costs and passed the Lower Drug Costs Now Act. This bipartisan bill offers real relief to the millions of Americans who struggle to afford their needed medications. The bill would allow Medicare to use its buying power to negotiate lower drug prices, create an out-of-pocket cap for seniors in Medicare Part D, and crack down on excessive drug price increases.
AARP has been tracking drug prices for 12 years. For each year, the price for prescription drugs has increased much faster than…
Representative Brian Fitzpatrick’s recent statement regarding the rationale for his impeachment vote was insulting to all informed citizens. He claims that impeachment “should happen only after a formal law enforcement investigation where independent, non-partisan factual findings of criminal activity are presented to Congress.” Historically, according to the Congressional Research Service, Report No. R44260, “Impeachment and Removal,” less than one-third of the articles that the House has adopted have explicitly charged the violation of a criminal statute or used the…
As tensions continued to rise Sunday in the Middle East over the killing of Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani, suburban activists and political leaders gathered in downtown Naperville to rally against an escalation of military action in the region.
The No War with Iran peace rally at the Dandelion Fountain featured speakers and saw a turnout of over 100 sign-carrying protesters objecting to President Donald Trump’s decision to order the missile strike that killed the Iranian leader.
Police in Lubbock say a man who shot at a police officer early Sunday was then fatally shot when two officers returned gunfire.
Police said in a news release that 30-year-old Drew Nichols Wallace-Flores was killed in the shooting in a southwest Lubbock neighborhood.
Police said the officers were investigating a report from a resident of seeing a man on security video checking vehicle door handles in the neighborhood shortly after 5:30 a.m. Sunday when the man fled as one officer arrived.
Police said the officer gave chase on foot and as the second officer officer arrived,…
Donald Trump has many characteristics of a dictator.
Two of his best friends are dictators: When Vladimir Putin tells him something, he believes it, and Kim Jong Un writes him love letters. He has suggested, somewhat in jest, serving more than eight years. He likes the idea of Xi Jinping, China’s leader, having a lifetime appointment.
Trump is narcissistic. How many times…
A list of earnings of every NRL player will help the game’s salary cap auditor determine Latrell Mitchell’s market value should he accept a cut-price contract from South Sydney.
It’s understood NRL auditor Richard Gardham has final discretion to determine market value using a list of comparative players to reach his decision.
Already this summer Mitchell has been offered wildly different contract sums including more than $1 million per season from the Wests Tigers and a withdrawn contract from the Roosters worth $800,000 per year.
South Sydney’s $400,000, one-year deal makes Gardham’s…

The benefits of budgeting at any level depend on being realistic. A family or a government that plans to spend more money than it is likely to have just asks for trouble.
The poor fiscal condition of New Jersey state government makes realistic budgeting more critical. Yet state law puts revenue forecasting in the hands of just the governor’s office.
That makes it more subject to partisan influence, with biased forecasts supporting tax increases or tax cuts, and always more spending. Unilateral action also insulates the revenue forecast from the sort of…

Brexit vote, US unrelated
Brexit voting has no credence here. Beware of the candidates like Joe Biden and Sunday news analysts who say populist sentiment in England could spell disaster for Democrats here if the party picks a far left candidate. They are confusing issues and candidates.
Jeremy Corbyn is as despised in England as Hillary Clinton is here. Flawed candidates like Clinton and Corbyn are the reason populist candidates won in 2016 and recently in England to settle the three year struggle in Parliament over Brexit, nothing more. The issues here are…
